Three trends for the music industry in 2012: Mandar Thakur

Times Music COO Mandar Thakur lists three trends he foresees in the Indian music industry this year

  1. IP (Intellectual property) will be effectively recognized this year but whether they will make out of it is questionable. Usage of copyright on 3G, 4G will attain mature status from the puckering happening over last few years.
  2. Segregation in music industry will be clear and specialty will rule. Players concentrating in niche spaces will fare better than masters of all trades. This would happen over the next 12 to 18 months.
  3. The entire digital story in India has revolved around mobile and with talks of Amazon entering Indian market and the recent Flipkart acquisition, there would be rise in revenues from mobile internet. International music services will also have some impact in India because of growing market of smart phones, tablets and the lined up 4G roll out. The digital music industry will take off in true sense as opposed to the growth led by telecom sector.
