Director Jayaraj has occasionally brought surprises to Malayalam film music with his choice of music directors. First he roped in the lyricist Kaithapram to compose music for his film Deshaadanam and the song kaLi veeduRangiyallO became popular. When he roped in Jassie Gift for his film 4 the people, it became a trendsetter in the Malayalam film music space and Jassie instantly became one of the favourite music directors in south India. With his latest, The Train, Jayaraj has brought in singer Srinivas to compose music. Though Srinivas has composed music for Tamilfilms, this is his first in Malayalam. The album has seven songs and it’s a beautiful package in terms of the melody and orchestration. There is freshness in the songs and the choice of singers.
The first track in the album – Chirakengu – is sung by Alka Ajith, winner of a Tamil reality show called Airtel Super Singer Junior in Vijay TV where Srinivas was once a judge. Alka is a 14 yr old but you don’t feel you are listening to a kid singing when you hear her soothing and beautiful voice. Also, the guitar riffs in this song are beautiful.
There is another version of this song with a different melody, sung by Aravind Venugopal and Sharanya Srinivas. Both singers have done a good job on the vocals but Sharanya’s diction could let you down at places. Ithile Varoo has two versions, sung by Sujatha and Srinivas. The melody line of this song is so beautiful that you could just close your eyes and immerse in the pure bliss of music. The song Ladki is sung by Hesham (Idea Star Singer fame), Srinivas with rap vocals by Maaya. It’s a peppy song that has its own mark and has Hindi lyrics partly which is sung by Srinivas. The song Naavoru starts with a beautiful harmony and then with the lead vocals of Yesudas. Though Yesudas’ voice sounds strained as in his recent recordings, this song is nice to hear mainly because of the beautiful orchestration. The last track is a Hindi song sung by Javed Ali and is already a hit.
To sum it up, Srinivas has done a wonderful job in this album and it brings a breath of freshness into the Malayalam film music.
