Moving Beyond the Bhangra

Languages: Punjabi is the most prominent spoken language, but Hindi is equally prevalent. Among the youngsters, it is typically Hinglish (mixture of Hindi & English) or Punglish (mixture of Punjabi & English).

Radio stations: All India Radio Chandigarh (AIR Chandigarh/Akashvani Chandigarh) is the most enjoyed radio station. Apart from private radio stations Big FM and My FM, there are two community radio channels- Vivek 90.4 FM and 91.2 MHz Jyothirgamaya (Punjab University) in the city as well. The main aim of these two community radio channels is to spread information and awareness in the city.

Local music channels: Chandigarh’s local music channels are 7 Sea and  Saada Channel. Some other local Punjabi music channels popular among the locals are Fastway Music, PTC Chakde, PTC Punjabi, ETC Punjabi, Josh Tadka, Mh1,Channel 2, Get Punjabi, Tashan,  Just Punjabi and Punjabi Hits.

Music stores: Music World, Planet M, Deepak Radios and  Dancing Videos are the main music retail stores. There is a Furtados branch in the city as well.

Local talent: Chandigarh has produced many great talents, one of whom is lyricist Irshad Kaamil, currently riding on his Rockstar fame. Other wellknown names on the local circuit are Babu Singh Maan, Satinder Sartaaz, Rinku Kalia, Jatinder Shaab, Atul Sharma, Gippy Grewal, Madan Gopal Singh ( Screenwriter, Film Theorist, Lyricist And Editor), Sardool Sikander,  Didar Singh Sandhu, Jaswinder Singh Bains, who is popularly known as Jazzy B.

Venues for live performance : The live music venues in the city mainly consist of Leisure Valley, Punjab Kala Bhawan, Kalagram, Indradhanush Auditorium, Bal Bhavan, Tagore Theatre and Punjab University’s Auditorium. Other preferable venues nowadays are pubs and cafes – Hops n Grains, Rock In Rio, Kava and Peddlers

Local music labels: Plasma Records, Speed Records, Music Waves, DMC music company

Local organizations for the promotion or appreciation of music: Local communities like CRC (Chandigarh Rock Community), North Zone Culture Centre, Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Academy and CITCO have been promoting music and culture in the city by organising live concerts and music events.

Genres: Chandigarh listens to all genres of music from Punjabi Folk to Fusion, Rock to Jazz and From Ghazals to Sufi and Pure Classical.

Studios or recording facilities: There are several studios in the city that provide recording facility. Some of them are Saraswati Studios, Sur Sangam, Wings Studios, Dada Studio, Cheema Studio, Cosmo Studio and Saffron Touch.
